The Ford Foundation and three supporting organizations (Wikimedia Indonesia, ICT Watch and the Association of Independent Journalists) officially launched "Cipta Media Bersama" in Jakarta on Friday, July 15, 2011. This open call media grant program is hoped to encourage new initiatives to improve the Indonesian mediascape. The committee has selected four topics in which public can submit their ideas to compete"
Up to USD one million (US$ 1,000,000.00, equivalent to 8.5 billion rupiahs) will be granted to selected individuals, groups, or organizations. In the early selection stage, the general public is also invited to vote for the top five best projects through the www.ciptamedia.org website, while the initial selection team will select 25 initiatives. A total of 30 proposals will be forwarded to the Advisory and Final Selection Team, consisting of 9 (nine) experts who will decide on November 7, 2011, which proposals will be awarded the grant.
David Hulse, the Ford Foundation Country Representative for Indonesia, in his opening remarks stressed the Ford Foundation's support of freedom of expression. Globally there's is a single common remedy for all problems: social justice. According to David, the right to express oneself is a very important basic need that must be protected, surpassing the need for food, clothing, and shelter. Heidi Arbuckle, as Ford Foundation Media Officer, mentioned that this grant was not only hoped to create new initiatives, but more importantly, to garner public awareness of their rights and responsibilities as users and creators of media.
Wimar Witoelar, a well known critic of Indonesian media, asked the public to think and rethink the current media policy and regulations, whether the old ones are appropriate for today's new media practices. Onno Purbo, an Indonesian technology expert, stated that this initiative could lead to an important, fundamental, change in the Indonesian people's paradigms, using the best examples and practices.
